Growth Lesson: Master Your Money Mindset
I grew up very privileged and a little spoiled. We lived in nice houses. I attended exclusive private schools. And we traveled to fancy destinations. But I was taught nothing about money.
But I was taught that if met unspoken expectations I would be materially rewarded. When I lost weight, we went shopping. When I broke up with the boyfriend they didn’t like, they bought me a car.
Money felt like manipulation. Instead of freedom.
It took me years to realize that money and I had a fraught relationship.
I married someone who used me for my parents’ money and left me in 6-figure debt because I didn’t know how to stick up for myself.
I formed an unequal business partnership because I didn’t know how to talk about what I was worth.
I struggled to charge my value with clients, routinely underpricing my products and services.
This is the exercise that started my money-healing journey.
It’s a little woo-woo, but it’s powerful AF. Be prepared to get emotional.
Get Your Money Mind Right
Early on during COVID I joined a very expensive, truly awful coaching program. Genuinely it was such a depressing waste of money. But one good thing came out of it.
The coach brought in a spirituality coach to lead a few sessions. And she led one about our relationship to money.
And it was that call that opened my eyes to how dysfunctional my relationship with money truly was (yes, I am painfully aware of the irony of me learning this because I wasted my money on a terrible coaching program).
But this coach taught me a process that helped me uncover the truth about my money mindset and start to heal it.
It’s a four-step process.
Before you get started, I want you to carve out some time and create a safe space for yourself. Pour a cup of coffee or tea. Sit in a comfy chair or outside looking at something beautiful.
You need time, space, quiet, and calm.
You might get emotional during this journey. It’s okay. And it’s worth it.
#1. Take Inventory of Your Limiting Beliefs About Money
Now, I want you to pull out a journal and a pen. A computer is okay too, but make sure you give yourself time and space to let the creative and honest juices flow.
I want you take inventory of every limiting belief you have about money.
This can be anything you remember your parents saying when you were a kid.
Or things you say to yourself or others now.
Excuses you make for your money problems.
All of it.
Be exhaustive.
A few ideas to get you started:
Money is the root of all evil
Rich people are assholes
I don’t care about money
Earning money takes tons of hard work.
I need to do X, Y, or Z before I can make more money
I can’t be rich because I have A, B, or C.
Or because I don’t have D, E, or F.
I think talking about money is tacky (one of mine!)
Write them all down. Some will feel bigger, more impactful, and longer lasting in your life than others. Make note of those.
#2. Take Inventory of Every Time You Handed Money Your Power over to Someone Else
This step can fill you with sadness and regret. It was deeply painful for me to face that nearly every self-sabotaging decision I made in my life stemmed from my toxic relationship with money.
It was devastating.
But as I wrote these memories down and took stock of them all, the power they held started to fade. Suddenly, I began to see that I could turn this around. Awareness was the first step.
Again, write them all down. Even the small ones.
Some ideas to get you started:
When you paid for something you didn’t want or need to
When you didn’t negotiate the higher salary you felt you deserved
When you let a client underpay you
When you never asked a friend to repay you for the money you loaned them
When you loaned them money you didn’t want to in the first place
When you paid a bill late because the thought of it stressed you out so much
When you didn’t ask for a payment plan even though you needed it
Write them all down. Take inventory. Get those memories out of you. I know it will bring up a lot of emotions.
Next, I’ll show you how to turn each one into something that ensures they will never happen again.
Before we get to step #3, I want you to take a break. Go for a walk, get a workout in, take a shower.
Let these ideas marinate in your mind. You will think of more examples of both limiting beliefs and stories when you gave your power away. Come back and add them to the list.
#3. Turn the Negative into the Positive
Now, go through both lists and transform these anchors from your past to fuel for your future.
Starting with your limiting beliefs, rewrite each statement into a positive affirmation about your empowered and healthy relationship with money and the positive role money plays in your life.
Here are some examples to get you started:
Money is the root of all evil
Money is the root of all evil becomes I use money to do good in the world
Rich people are assholes becomes Money doesn’t make people kind or mean, but I use it to maximize my positive impact on others
Earning money takes tons of hard work becomes I earn money easily because being who I am adds tremendous value to the world
You get the idea. Make sure each statement is positive, inspiring, and empowering. It’s all about how money comes to you because of the value you naturally create in the world. And how you use that money to create even more value.
It’s a beautiful circle.
Now, do the same thing for your stories about giving your power away. Except for these, you’re going to rewrite the stories with how you would handle the situation now. But in a way that maintains your money power.
Some examples for you:
When that person expected me to pay for something I didn’t want or need, I let them know that I have no intention to purchase that item. And I walk out.
During my performance review, I come to the meeting with examples of the positive impact of my work, quotes from customers thanking me for my performance, and industry comparisons showing that for my job description, I should be making 15% more.
I tell my client that if they want to pay less, then we can negotiate which parts of my proposal they would like to remove. Otherwise, we can keep things as they are.
I know this section can take some time. And it will feel uncomfortable imagining these new scenarios. But they should also feel empowering as hell.
#4. Read these at least 1x/day for at least 30 days
It’s best to read through these new positive statements every morning and every evening. The goal is to feel the positivity, empowerment, and money love as you read them. Soak it in.
As you read them, imagine the badass version of you that embodies these positive affirmations and empowered stories.
This process was transformative for me. It launched me on a whole new way of approaching money — in my life and my business.
Give it a try and see how the results build over time.
