Growth Insight of the Week: How to Turn Challenge into Opportunity
Life is hard. It is full of unforeseen obstacles and challenges that can easily derail you on your journey to entrepreneurial success — if you let them.
But the secret to overcoming these challenges isn't to ignore them or somehow wield supernatural powers and avoid them completely (because, uh, that's impossible).
No, the secret to overcoming life's challenges is to approach them from a different angle altogether and transform them into opportunities that propel you forward.
How is this possible?
Constraint Breeds Creativity.
If you are facing a new challenge, you also are undoubtedly dealing with the constraints set by that challenge.
Embrace Your Constraints.
Instead of bemoaning their existence, embrace them. Imagine how those constraints can reshape your plans and ultimately fuel your growth.Get Clarity on Your Goals
If you feel these constraints are blockers to your ability to achieve your goals, make sure you're clear about those goals in the first place.
If you're upset because you weren't able to secure investment in your startup, what were you hoping that money would help you accomplish? Make sure you have a crystal clear vision of the ultimate goal.Brainstorm Workarounds
Now that you have to accept these constraints, can you get innovative about how you can accomplish your goals despite them — or even because of them?
I started a new strength training program 2 weeks ago. 3 days ago, I broke my ankle and today I had surgery to fix it. I will not be walking on two feet for at least 6 weeks. There goes my new routine!
Instead, I'll be focusing on mat-based yoga and pilates, bodyweight exercises that build strength and flexibility, and getting my nutrition dialed in.Learn, Measure, and Iterate.
This is the perfect time to experiment, measure your results, and continue trying new methods to uncover what works for you.
This process of adapting to constraints can level up your skills at experimentation and iteration, transforming you into an innovation engine.
Yeah, it sucks when things don't go your way. Trust me, I know.
But there is beauty and opportunity in these situations if you learn to embrace the challenge, mine it for the gold within it, and keep moving forward.
As you might imagine, this is all top of mind for me, right now. Last Saturday, I fell stepping off my back deck. And I fell hard. I rolled my right ankle and heard a loud crack and then while trying regain my balance rolled my left ankle.
Yep, I sprained one and broke the other. This Tuesday I had surgery to screw a plate into my fibula and to repair the extensive ligament and tendon damage I did as well. Two surgeries for the price of one. And while I hobble around on crutches, I’m doing it on a still sprained, swollen, and bruised ankle.
Yes, it sucks. But I am realizing that it affords me a beautiful opportunity to slow down, and get focused on my writing and how I serve my audience — YOU.
So please, tell me. What’s one way I could help you achieve your goals as an entrepreneur? Where do you need help? What support do you seek?
Please, take 30s and comment or reply to send me a quick email.
Growth Resource of the Week:
Right now, I’m on week 1 of Ship 30 for 30 — THE course that has taught 4000+ people to build a daily writing habit.
So far, this course has been incredible. Everything — the in-depth content, the engaged community, the detailed onboarding, the gamified program, the caring mentors, the hilarious and experienced teachers — has been impressive, illuminating, and fun!
I am only 1 week into this experience, and I already feel like this is one of the best investments I’ve made in my business, career, and life. I highly recommend it. They do a cohort every quarter and I will probably be upgrading my commitment to the community, so I can take it again and again.
HGF Episode(s) of the Last 2 Weeks:
Theresa Bailey is one of the most fascinating and impressive Founders I have the honor of working with.
She has a book about Hockey Moms (featuring interviews with 60+ moms of diverse hockey players) with Harper Collins coming out in October.
And is the creator of Play-Doh Power Solutions, the only Hasbro licensed Play-Doh workshop that is revolutionizing how teams use play to create psychological safety.
She is a downright powerhouse! And this interview reflects her courage, vulnerability, and humor.

Perhaps the most important skill an entrepreneur must learn is sales. You will use it when finding new customers, investors, partners, and yes, even employees.
And yet, in my experience, it is the skill that most entrepreneurs lack and, worse, resist learning.
It feels awkward and sometimes distasteful. But it is necessary.
In this episode: 9 Dating Rules to Make You Better at Sales, I share some simple truths about selling that you should already know from dating and relationships in general.
